IBM recently announced the end of support for its "Hammerhead" platform, also known as the Cloud Pak for Data System 1.0.7.8 through 1.0.8x.
The Hammerhead platform came into existence in 2022 to satisfy the ongoing demand for Netezza as a standalone appliance. When the Netezza database was relaunched in 2020, hosted on the Cloud Pak for Data platform, many businesses were disadvantaged because they only needed to run NPS workloads, with no requirement for the OpenShift Container Platform (OCP), which ran in the background and competed for CPU resources. The solution was to disable all features that depended on OpenShift and offer CP4DS 1.0.7.8 as an upgrade.
CP4DS 1.0.7.8 has had a short lifecycle. An issue has been that it runs on RHEL 7 which has already reached EOS, but Hammerhead customers have been given a grace period to upgrade with 2 service packs planned. When 1.0.9.0 with RHEL 8.x is released, it will be a fully supported release for Netezza, covered by Extended Update Support (EUS) from Red Hat. The final EOS date for Hammerhead is therefore still TBD.
